How do I know if my mortar needs repointing?

Look closely at the joints. If the mortar is recessed more than a quarter inch, crumbling, or visibly missing in spots, it's time. You can also run a key along the joint — if it crumbles easily, the mortar has softened. When in doubt, have us take a look.

Is repointing just cosmetic?

No — it's structural. Mortar joints keep water out of the masonry and hold the bricks in place. Deteriorated mortar lets water infiltrate, which leads to freeze-thaw damage, spalling bricks, and eventually instability.

How long does repointing last?

Fresh repointing done with the right mortar mix should last 20-30 years with normal exposure. Chimney tops and the few feet below tend to deteriorate faster because they're most exposed.

Can you match the color of my existing mortar?

Yes. We mix to match the existing joint color and profile as closely as possible. Fresh mortar will look slightly different at first as it cures, but it blends in well over time.
